Woman died after double-decker smashed into railway bridge

A bus driver has been charged over the death of a woman passenger killed when his double-decker smashed into a railway bridge.

Eric Vice, 64, was behind the wheel when the roof of his bus was sliced off in the crash.

Mum Jessica Jing Ren, 36, had been sitting in the front seat of the top deck and was airlifted to hospital but died 11 days later.

Seven other passengers were injured on the X10 service bus when it hit the low-lying bridge in Swansea, South Wales.

The top deck was crumpled - with a section of the roof being thrown onto the rail line above the bridge.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "The collision happened in Neath Road, Swansea on 12 December 2019.

"Jessica Jing Ren who was a passenger on the double decker bus died in hospital from injuries sustained as a result of the collision.

"Eric Vice, aged 64, of Dunvant has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

"He is due to appear before Swansea Magistrates court on 23 December."

Jessica's heartbroken family paid tribute to her at the time, describing her as a "loved and talented academic".

They said: “Jessica was the loving wife of Wenquang Wang, a devoted mother to five year old Yushu Wang and the cherished Daughter of Mingqi Ren.

“Jessica had been a visiting academic who had joined the Accounting and Finance department in the School of Management in Swansea University in July this year, from Huanghuai University in China.

“A much loved and talented academic, Jessica will be deeply missed by her family and her friends both in China and in Swansea and will leave a great void in their lives."

The First Cymru bus had been diverted from its normal five-mile route between two university campuses by roadworks.

At the time of the crash, Andrew Sherrington, Managing Director at First Cymru said: "Everyone at First Cymru is shocked by this incident and our heartfelt sympathies go out to those injured.

"The service was off its normal route due to a temporary road closure."
