Police have released a 19 year old man on conditional bail, after he was arrested in relation to a reported serious sexual assault in Cardiff City centre on Saturday night.

A 16 year old girl has now been released from the University Hospital of Wales and is being supported by specially trained officers and her family.

It's understood the incident happened just before 11pm on Saturday night in the vicinity of Sandon Street and Adam Street.

Detective Inspector Grant Wilson said: "Sexual assault is one of the most traumatic and devastating experiences a person can suffer and we at South Wales Police are committed to providing a first-class service to victims.

"In Cardiff we have a strong tradition of partnership work to keep our city safe and we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the public and city centre business community for their continued help and support during this on-going investigation.

"While the person arrested has been arrested on conditional bail, our investigation is very much on-going and a team of detectives are carrying out extensive enquiries in and around the city centre.

"If anyone has concerns about what has happened or has information that can assist us, please approach a police officer or contact us by one of the following means.”

Cordons that were in place near the University of South Wales Cardiff campus have now been lifted and enquiries are continuing.

Police have thanked those who have assisted with the investigation, particularly in providing CCTV footage.
