Takeaways selling kebabs in West Sussex are being investigated to make sure they are not misleading customers.

Trading standards officers purchased ‘lamb’ or doner kebabs for testing from independent takeaway outlets in Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Worthing, Haywards Heath, Horsham and Crawley.

Workers in 10 out of 14 restaurants wrongly told a diner who said they had a milk allergy they would be fine to eat a lamb doner.

The kebabs were sent for examination which found all to contain milk protein.

Tests revealed most of the kebabs contained other meat including chicken, turkey, beef and veal

Richard Sargeant from West Sussex Trading Standards, said: "All food establishments, including takeaway outlets, have a responsibility to ensure ingredients in dishes have been checked and implement allergen control procedures.

"Not doing so is reckless, and highly irresponsible.

"We’re contacting food businesses in West Sussex to make them aware of the results of this investigation and provide them with advice on allergies and descriptions of food."
