Staff and customers have been evacuated from the Westquay shopping centre in Southampton following reports of an explosion this morning (Wednesday 19th).

Passers-by reported seeing a fireball and hearing a bang inside the podium car park in Harbour Parade at around 9.30am.

Video footage from the scene appears to show a vehicle on fire prior to the incident with a large black plume of smoke coming from it.

The centre has confirmed that people workers were moved out of the building for their safety.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews from the St Mary's Redbridge and Hightown stations were sent to deal with reports of smoke and flames.

A spokesperson said:

"The fire is now out but there remains smoke in the area and crews are currently working to clear this.

"We expect to have a presence on site for some time until the incident is fully resolved.

"The road closure remains in place. We thank everyone for their patience while we deal with this matter."
