A broken water main has resulted in a 20ft high plume of water shooting into the air next to the A27 in Chichester.

Portsmouth Water said a contractor working for another utility firm drilled through a 600mm trunk main on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for the water company said engineers were "working hard to repair the pipe".

The incident caused traffic delays around Chichester with the westbound carriageway of the A27 closed between the Portfield and Bognor Road roundabouts.
