Southampton's 'toothless' problem
A new campaign group is warning people in Southampton are waiting over two years to see a dentist
Stories of DIY dentistry are now 'commonplace' in the city and are on the increase, according to 'Toothless in Southampton'.
It's calling for ‘An NHS dentist for everyone’.
Local spokesperson Helen Field said:
"As fewer dental practices are providing NHS dental treatments in the city and surrounding areas, we are seeing the negative impact this is having on families, men, women, and children.
"People have simply had enough of not being able to see a dentist when they need one urgently, or for regular check-ups.
"The government cannot continue ignoring Southampton’s oral health needs.
"We all want an NHS dentist, and we won’t stop until everyone gets one".
British Dental Association Chair Eddie Crouch said: "NHS dentistry is on the brink, and families across Southampton are paying the price.
"Underfunded and overstretched, the service is now haemorrhaging talent, while families are unable to secure the care they desperately need.
"This is a crisis made in Westminster.
"Until Ministers deliver real reform and fair funding, we will not see progress".
