Transport bosses have decided to close Southampton's Itchen Bridge from 7pm on Wednesday night (1 November) because of Storm Ciarán.

The city council says it will remain shut until the forecast strong winds have died down.

In a statement, Southampton City Council said: "Storm Ciarán is expected to bring very strong winds along the southern coast from Wednesday 1 November which are not anticipated to reduce until Friday 3 November. These winds are likely be followed by additional rain.

"We are taking precautionary measures across the area to prevent accidents and injury to the public and our workforce.

"This includes closing the Itchen Bridge on Wednesday 1 November from 19:00. This closure will remain in place until Storm Ciarán has passed or when the weather significantly subsides.

"Buses will be redirected, please check with your bus operator website before travel and it is likely that other roads may also be closed in the coming days. We ask that if need to travel, check your route, and please travel with care.

"Guidance and updates on further impacts of the storm will be published on our website and socials."
