Motorists are facing severe delays after a collision closed the westbound M27 near Southampton.

Police have shut the motorway between junction 7 at Hedge End and junction 5 for Eastleigh.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Two cars and a lorry are believed to have been involved in the collision.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the M27 westbound.

Officers have attended after reports shortly after 12.30pm today of a serious collision at junction five.

"We ask road users to please avoid the area for the time being and we thank you for your patience."
