Seagull-proof bins tested in Swanage

The chute is operated by foot pedal

New seagull-proof bins are being tested in Swanage.

They have a chute which is operated via a foot pedal.

They're also solar powered and have a ram to squash down the litter to make more room.

In a statement, Dorset Council said: "We are trialing new bins in Swanage.

"They're solar powered and have an internal ram that squashes the litter down so it won't need emptying so frequently.

"The chute is operated by a foot pedal and the ram can't be accessed from the outside so you can't catch your hand in it. And seagulls won't get to the rubbish.

"They will be located in The Square and near The Mowlem centre.

"If the trial is successful you may see more of these bins around the town."
