Charles III has been proclaimed King during historic ceremonies in towns and cities across the south.

Crowds gathered in Bournemouth, Southampton, Portsmouth, Newport and Chichester on Sunday to hear the historic announcement.

Chairman of New Forest District Council, Cllr Alan O’Sullivan, gave the proclamation in Lyndhurst.

Cllr O'Sullivan said: "Our sadness at this time is shared by people across the globe as we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of service given by our longest-reigning monarch.

"But the basis on which our monarchy is built has ensured that through the centuries, the Crown has passed in an unbroken line of succession."

A book of condolence is open at the Great Hall in Winchester, offering people the opportunity to add their thoughts and memories of Her Majesty.

It will remain open until 5pm on the day following the funeral on Monday.
