Emergency services are tackling a large fire that has broken out at a waste processing unit near Portsmouth.

Officers were first called to the area around Tipner Lane in Portsmouth shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Saturday (July 6th).

Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene, working closely with Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Police force to divert traffic and ensure the safety of the public.

Smoke billowed across the nearby M275 connecting Portsmouth with the rest of the country, with drivers being urged to drive carefully to avoid crashes.

As the morning progressed, the force continued to attend the blaze and bring the fire under control.

The unit has been described as being across two different floors with around 60 to 100 tones of domestic dry waste being processed at the plant.

Residents living close to the area have been urged to shut doors and windows in order to avoid the smoke coming from the scene.

The effort to put out the fire remains ongoing, as the fire is dampened - despite the large smoke continuing to rise from the site.

National Highways advised drivers to prepare for long delays as other routes into Portsmouth itself have become "congested".
