Major commuter road in Portsmouth closes for eight weeks for sewer repairs
Southern Water’s £2.5m project on Eastern Road hopes to futureproof pipeline network
Motorists in Portsmouth are being advised to prepare for disruptions as Eastern Road undergoes an eight-week closure for major sewer repairs.
Southern Water has shut the southbound carriageway between Burrfields Road and Hayling Avenue from 10pm on Sunday, 4th January, after recent site surveys revealed the need for significant excavations to fix a burst sewer main.
Diversions have been put in place to manage traffic, with drivers encouraged to use alternative routes and allow extra travel time.
Eastern Road has experienced ongoing challenges with its sewer network, with previous works in 2024 seeing over 1,000 metres of pipe relined following repeated bursts, leaks, and flooding.
Southern Water hopes this £2.5m project will deliver a long-term solution using innovative lining technology to futureproof Portsmouth’s sewer system for years to come.
The closure details
The southbound closure will remain in place for up to eight weeks, during which time Southern Water’s engineers will carry out excavation work, pipe repairs, and relining.
Work started late on Sunday and aims to minimize future risks to the network, saving Portsmouth residents future disruptions caused by sewer damage.
Southern Water thanked the public for their patience and understanding, saying, “The long-term solution will make the pipeline stronger, ensuring the reliability of this section of the city’s sewer network for years to come. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused and encourage people to plan their journeys and consider alternative routes.”
Driver advice
The closure of this vital commuter route makes it essential for drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys. With delays likely at times, travelers are urged to take alternative routes into the city whenever possible.
