Police patrols have been increased in part of Southampton to stop an escalation of violence following the stabbing of an 18-year-old man.

The victim was found at 2.45am on Saturday by passers-by in Manor Road North, Merryoak, police said.

A large police cordon was set up in the area as an investigation took place.

Officers were given extra powers to stop and search people for knives and weapons.

Police said it was a tactic to keep communities safe but admitted it was not a long term solution to violence on the city's streets.

Acting Inspector Pat Flemming from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We only use section 60 as an emergency short-term tactic.

"We do not suggest that it is a long term solution to violent disorder or weapon related crime, however we have concerns raised by the community and this is our response.

"We know that some will think this inhibits our ability to catch those carrying weapons, however it is important communities are informed we are taking action.

"It is also helps prevent other incidents of serious violence occurring and so helps us prevent crime."

The emergency power was authorised until 7.00am on Sunday, but could be extended.
