Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne has revealed there 49 gun certificates revoked and 14 refused across Sussex and Surrey in the last year.

Firearms were the topic of discussion at this week's Police Scrutiny meeting between the PCC and Chief Constable Jo Shiner.

It was also revealed there are currently 9,615 firearms certificate holders and over 30,000 shotgun certificate holders in the two counties.

Jo Shiner says changes to the guidance on refusals has played its part in the number of applications being rejected.

She said: "There's some further developments in the new guidance which broadens the criteria for refusal as well such as theft of fraud which were previously not included.

"It also now defines that previous violence is not required as a threshold for refusal".
