A fire in the thatched roof of a house near Romsey was started by sparks from a chimney, according to investigators.

Over 100 firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze in Wellow Wood Road in West Wellow at 10.00pm on Friday.

The fire service said the thatched roof of the house was well alight, but everyone was out of the property when the first firefighters arrived.

A total of 16 fire engines were sent to the scene.

Area manager Jason Avery from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "All crews, officers and our control team worked tremendously hard throughout the incident. I am very proud of them.

"No one was injured, but the house was badly damaged."
