Murder arrest after man's body found in Havant stream

Police say they are conducting 'urgent investigations'

Police investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a stream in Havant have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Officers were called to the Chalton Crescent area of Leigh Park following the discovery at around 7am on Monday morning (June 19th).

The man has since been identified as 53-year-old Barry Cairns, of Leigh Park.

Hampshire Police said his next of kin has been notified and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

A 47-year-old man has been taken into custody.

Barry's death is being treated as suspicious, with police remaining in the Leigh Park area on Tuesday for enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Sarah McConnell, who is leading the investigation, said:

"Our thoughts remain with the family of Barry Cairns at this time, and we are urgently following up all lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding Barry’s death.

"We understand that incidents of this nature can be unsettling for the local community, but we want people to be reassured that there will be a heightened police presence in the local area as we conduct a thorough investigation.

"As part of our enquiries, police will be speaking to residents in Leigh Park and reviewing CCTV footage. Please don’t hesitate to speak to our officers if you have any concerns or any information to assist our enquiries.”
