Several manhole covers were blown open during an underground fire in Poole yesterday.

Firefighters from Westbourne were called out to attend.

They found an underground fire which had affected at least four manhole covers and caused some loss of power in the immediate area.

A spokesperson for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"Anyone who has lost their electricity supply is asked to report it by calling 105.

"Ashley Road was closed at its junction with Mansfield Road and Victoria Road, and local people were advised to avoid the area.

"Firefighters maintained a cordon until it was safe for us to leave.

"One fire was extinguished, and engineers from SSEN are continuing with their repairs."
