Improvements to M27 Junction 10 to start after funding agreed
The upgrade will help support extra traffic anticipated from the planned new town of Welborne
Major improvements to Junction 10 of the M27 are getting underway after funding was agreed.
The upgrade would see an exit slip road built on the westbound carriageway, and an entry slip road constructed on the eastbound side, as well as allowing road users to access all routes from the junction.
It is part of plans for the new town of Welborne, located just north of Fareham.
The main developer, Buckland Group, have agreed to underwrite over 95% of the more than ÂŁ100m funding package after discussions with Hampshire County Council and Homes England.
The upgrades will help support the extra traffic anticipated once 6,000 new homes planned in Welborne are built.
A spokesperson for Buckland Group said the improvements are "critical to improving connectivity and traffic flow in the local area", and connecting Fareham and Welborne to the A32 and M27.
"The upgrade will be delivered within the next two years, during the first phase of Welborne, and it means all of the 6,000 planned homes can now be built in the future."
Preparatory road works are now underway at the motorway junction, under the leadership of Hampshire County Council.
A spokesperson for the authority said they are pleased this work has begun to "enable the project to quickly mobilise once legal agreements are finalised."
A spokesperson for Fareham Borough Council said the M27 Junction 10 upgrade was the "single largest investment required", adding "concluding the funding arrangements to enable the delivery of this scheme is very welcome."
