Itchen Bridge no longer closing during summer maintenance works
But it will still need to close when resurfacing and drainage repair works are carried out later
The Itchen Bridge in Southampton will no longer need to close during maintenance works this summer.
It reverses a decision to close the bridge for eight weeks from 15 July.
Southampton City Council say the results of more detailed surveys led to them deeming new safety fencing could be installed with motor vehicles still using the bridge.
But the authority adds the bridge will still need to close during a second phase to replace drains and resurface the carriageway.
Details of these works are set to be released "in due course."
