House severely damaged after fire

An investigation is underway into a house fire in Southampton

Around 35 firefighters were called to Northam Road on Monday morning.

Crews from St Mary’s, Hightown, Eastleigh and Hamble were first called at 8:21am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have been using hose reel jets, the aerial ladder and ventilation fans to tackle the blaze which spread from the basement to the ground and first floors.

Police officers put a cordon in place as local residents were advised to avoid the area.

Urban Search and Rescue advisors were called to assess the building and ascertain whether it was structurally safe.

The incident was scaled down with two crews remaining to maintain a watching brief on the property which suffered significant damage.

Hampshire Constabulary said officers were working with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire.The electrical supply was isolated before the building was boarded up.
