Ex-gambling addict says 'there is so much support available'
Paul from Sussex says that overcoming the small hurdles is proof to yourself that you can do it
Paul from Sussex’s experience of gambling harm was shaped by exposure to gambling advertising from a young age. During his first year of university aged 20, after enjoying the success of winning some money during his first trip to a betting shop with a friend, Paul began taking an interest in sports betting and would visit high street betting shops on a regular basis, before moving onto online gambling as it was easier to access.
After graduating university and starting work, Paul found himself with a larger disposable income, which led to increased gambling activity. Over several years, gambling took a significant toll on his life – he would often be living paycheque to paycheque and sometimes would not even have the money to travel to work.
A turning point came when Paul’s friend spotted him entering a betting shop after he had claimed to have stopped gambling. Paul had built up significant debt and had feelings of desperation – even experiencing suicidal thoughts, but knew it was time he did something about his situation.
We spoke with Paul, who opened up about the support available, as he wants to use his story to inspire others to overcome gambling addictions.
"You do have a place in this world, and a positive impact on people"
"We've all got different stories- and the fact we can overcome it shows that you can. Find your purpose and work towards something"
Since seeking help, Paul has rediscovered his previous hobbies, which included exploring different cultures on holiday. For the first time in many years, Paul was able to go abroad, visiting Thailand with his friends and he is even hoping to buy his own house soon – a testament to his resilience and the support that helped him to rebuild his life.
“Everyone should be aware of the risks associated with gambling as it’s never possible to predict who might be affected – particularly with so many gambling ads everywhere. Gambling harm had a devastating impact on every aspect of my life, which is why I am so passionate about protecting young people from the pressures they face.
Opening up to family and friends was probably the most daunting part of the process as I quite simply didn’t know what to say. However, once I had, I felt the biggest sense of relief and the support I have received since has truly helped me turn my life around. I want others to know that they can overcome challenges like I have and it’s always okay to reach out for help.”
