Firefighters have been tackling a fire at a boatyard in Portsmouth.

Crews from Southsea, Corsham and Portchester were called out yesterday afternoon to the fire involving a number of boats and a storage container.

They spent around 5 hours tackling the blaze.

People living nearby were asked to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smoke.

A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said:

"We were alerted to the incident shortly before 4pm when around twenty 999 calls came into the HIWFRS Control Room.

"Firefighters used four jets, two hose reel jets and an ultra high pressure lance and foam to tackle the fire with the fire extinguished and crews returning to station at around 9pm."

Its not yet clear how the fire started.
