Fire crews spend night tackling blaze in Southampton scrapyard

Firefighters have spent the night tackling a blaze which broke out at a scrap yard in Southampton.

Flames and smoke were seen coming from a commercial building in Millbank Street in Northam at just before 10.30pm on Wednesday (September 11th).

Eight engines from St Mary’s, Hightown, Redbridge, Eastleigh, Portchester, Fareham, Alton and Basingstoke were sent to the scene, along with two aerial ladder platforms.

Crews used plant machinery to turn over and dampen scrap waste.

No-one was reported to have been injured in the fire.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service said the blaze had been brought under control as of just after 2am on Thursday, with two engines remaining at the scene to continue damping down any hotspots.

Those living close to the scene, especially to the east of the area, are being advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke.
