Fire causes major damage at pub on the Isle of Wight
People living next door had to be evacuated from their homes
Firefighters have tackled a large blaze at a pub on the Isle of Wight.
Crews from across the island were called to The Portland Inn in Gurnard after smoke and flames were spotted coming from the roof in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 25).
Crews arrived to find the fire spreading through the first floor and into the loft space.
Residents living next door were safely evacuated as crews worked to contain the flames.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said:
"Firefighters from Newport, Ryde, East Cowes, Sandown and Shanklin responded to the scene, using an aerial ladder, main jets, and hose reel jets to bring the fire under control. A relief strategy was also implemented, with Hampshire crews assisting both at the site and in maintaining fire cover across the Island.
"By 6:00 AM, the fire had been extinguished, though the entire building sustained significant damage."
Firefighters remain on-site this morning to continue dampening down and ensure the fire is fully out.
