A driver who struck a pony in the New Forest and then failed to stop has appeared before magistrates.

A roan mare died following the incident which took place around 10.45pm on September 11th on Sway Road in Brockenhurst.

A VW Beetle was later reported in the car park of a hotel at Stoney Cross with extensive damage to it.

Investigations were carried out by Hampshire Police and Samantha Emily Andrews of Sheffield Close, Potton, Central Bedfordshire, was charged with failing to stop after an accident and using a vehicle in a condition likely to cause danger of injury.

The 44 year old pleaded guilty at Southampton Magistrates' Court last week and received 6 penalty points on her driving license, a ÂŁ500 fine and ÂŁ85 in costs along with a victim surcharge of ÂŁ50.

Plea not to leave livestock to suffer

Officials in the New Forest say it's important to call 999 if you're involved in an accident with livestock.

Not doing so could leave a pony or donkey to suffer an agonising death.

Accidents should be reported even if the animal runs off as it may have serious injuries.

The Agisters will always do their best to find and check out animals which have been involved in a collision with a vehicle.

'Expect the unexpected'

November and December are the worst months for animal accidents and sadly the last week is evidence of that,

In just three days four animals died including a mare and her filly at Stoney Cross Road.

With longer hours of darkness, dazzling headlights and poor weather drivers are being urged to take even more care.

Livestock are attracted to the roads in the winter to lick the salt after they'e been gritted.

New Forest Roads Awareness say drivers must be vigilant at all times;

"Livestock and wildlife are on the roads day and night, they are unpredictable and difficult to see. So please have 'That' conversation within your household, remind everyone of the dangers. It is better to #DriveToArrive, than be involved in an accident. IF you are unlucky enough to be involved in an accident, Please remember you must, by law, report it."
