Driver 'lucky to be alive' after car swept away in ford at Godshill
It happened during yesterday's flooding
Drivers in Fordingbridge and surrounding areas were warned to take extra care on the roads yesterday as flooding, fallen trees, and downed power lines caused widespread disruption.
The Fordingbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team advised motorists to avoid non-essential journeys and stay home if possible, as significant amounts of standing water have been reported across all road categories.
Vehicles stranded in standing water and floods
In Ringwood, near Poulner Primary School and Tesco’s, two vehicles became stranded in standing water. Police say large vehicles driving through at inappropriate speeds are creating wash that impacts nearby buildings, pedestrians, and other vehicles.
At Godshill, two vehicles attempted to drive through a flooded Ford but were met with fast-flowing currents. One vehicle was swept downstream and trapped under a footbridge.
The driver was rescued alive by nearby residents and local Hampshire Fire and Rescue units, but the incident highlights the serious danger of attempting to cross flooded Fords.
Drive to arrive and stay safe
Police are urging drivers to avoid flooded areas entirely and adhere to advice, saying: “NEVER attempt to drive through Fords in flood. It’s far better to arrive late or abandon a journey than put yourself and others in harm's way.”
Drivers should also ensure they are prepared for their journeys by checking weather and road warnings beforehand, dressing appropriately, and carrying essentials such as food, water, blankets, a torch, fuel, and a fully charged phone. Vehicles should also be inspected for flood preparedness.
The Fordingbridge Neighbourhood Policing team reminds drivers: "Cars can be replaced, people cannot.”
