People living with kidney failure in part of Hampshire will soon be able to get their life-saving treatment closer to home.

A 25-bed dialysis unit is being built next to Fareham Community Hospital in Sarisbury Green.

The centre, which is due to open in the spring, will treat up to 150 patients a week.

Natalie Borman from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, said: "For patients living with kidney failure the burden of travelling for their life-saving treatment three times a week has a big impact on quality of life for them and their families.

"This facility will treat up to 150 patients a week living in and around the area and significantly reduce travel time.

"We know people have asked why the centre isn’t going to be built within Fareham Community Hospital and a feasibility study was carried out to see if this would be possible.

"However due to the space and equipment required for renal dialysis this wasn’t a viable solution."

The centre will also provide services for people with chronic kidney disease, who would normally have to travel for specialist outpatient care, intravenous iron fusions, dialysis planning and education.
