A derelict hotel on the Isle of Wight has suffered extensive damage following a fire last night (Wednesday 13th).

Smoke was seen coming from the Cygnet Hotel on Carter Street in Sansown at around 10.30pm.

Five fire engines and crews from Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde, Ventnor and Newport, arrived on scene shortly after, with an aerial ladder platform and mobile incident command unit also called out.

They remained at the scene for much of the night.

Residents living nearby has been advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke from the fire.

The road had reopened as of Thursday morning, with much of the damage to the building understood to have affected the top two floors.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
