Dangerous Southampton road given funding
It's one of the top 50 dangerous A-roads in England
A busy road in Southampton has been given £875,000 in government funding.
The A3025 Portsmouth Road, which runs from the east into the city centre, is in the top 50 dangerous A-roads in England.
The money will be spent on new zebra crossings, improvements for cyclists and measures to support a lower speed limit from 30 to 20mph.
The funding is part of the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund, which aims to enhance the safety and ultimately help prevent fatal and serious injuries on the road networks across the country.
The measures are proposed to include:
• New zebra crossings at Botley Road and Spring Road
• Upgrades to crossing points at Fort Road and Adey Crescent
• Improved crossings and separation for cycles at the Saltmarsh Junction
• Measures along Portsmouth Road to support a lower speed limit, reducing from 30 mph to 20 mph
• Upgrade of existing signalised crossing at Manor Road South
The improvements will be progressed in consultation with the local community via public perceptions surveys and information drop-in sessions. The improvements will aim to start in Winter 2023.
