A 3-year-old boy who was hit by a car towing a caravan in Blandford has been discharged from hospital.

Dorset Police received a report at 4.34pm last Thursday (8 May) relating to a collision on a field by Blandford Leisure Centre in Milldown Road, involving a white Seat Leon – which was towing a caravan – and a child pedestrian.

Emergency services attended and the child – a three-year-old boy – was taken to Southampton Hospital by air ambulance for treatment to injuries that were believed to be serious.

A 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains under investigation for an offence of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation as further enquiries are carried out.

Sergeant Mike Burt, of the Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “We are very pleased to update that thankfully the little boy involved in this collision is making good progress in his recovery and has been deemed strong enough to be discharged from hospital.

“We continue to carry out enquiries to establish the full circumstances around this incident and I would again urge any witnesses, or anyone with relevant dashcam or other footage, to please contact us if you have not already spoken to police.

“This incident understandably had a significant impact on the local community, and we have continued to provide a policing presence in the area to provide reassurance. While we understand the interest of the public in this matter, we would urge people to refrain from speculation – particularly on social media – as we carry out a detailed enquiry into the circumstances around this collision.”
