A zoo near Bristol is paying tribute to a young zebra, who has lost her life.

Bosses at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in Clevedon believe that Hope's death was caused by fireworks.

Born during the first lockdown in March, last week's fireworks spooked Hope and she ran into the boundary of her enclosure.

The zoo has described her death as "tragic" and hopes it will make local residents aware of the impact fireworks can have on animals.

'She was so full of energy and life'

The Managing Director at Noah's Ark, Larry Bush said: “We’re feeling devastated by the loss of our young zebra Hope.

"She was so full of energy and life and she was a very healthy young zebra.

"It is such a tragedy that she has lost her life, seemingly as a result of fireworks being set off at nearby events which were intended as a celebration".

Noah's Ark says Hope was given her name because she symbolised "a ray of light and hope at a time which felt so bleak".

It has now suggested that people consider animal-friendly Bonfire Night celebrations, such as silent fireworks.

'We are all feeling her loss greatly'

Jayne Gibbins, a senior keeper at the zoo added: “Her birth was a real high point for us in amongst the challenges of having to close the zoo for three months in support of the national lockdown.

"We are all feeling her loss greatly".
