When Heather first found a lump in her right breast in February 2022 she never imagined how quickly her world would change.

“I’ll never forget the day to be quite honest of the diagnosis… that day my life completely changed” she says.

After being fast tracked to a breast cancer clinic Heather was given mammograms ultrasounds and biopsies all in the same day. Doctors told her they were “99.9% sure” she had breast cancer. Worse still a second tumour was found in her other breast. She was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer which only affects about 1 to 3% of new cases.

Heather thought her treatment would be over within a year but the reality was different. Radiotherapy and long term hormone therapy left her adjusting to ongoing side effects. “I honestly feel like a 90 year old most mornings” she admits. “You do have to adapt your lifestyle”

Yet out of her diagnosis came something positive. In January 2023 Heather founded the Taunton and Somerset Breast Friends Support Group. What started with 15 women has grown into what she proudly calls “an amazing pink army of over 130 ladies”

The group meets regularly and also supports one another through WhatsApp. Far from being gloomy Heather says meetings are filled with “so much laughter and chatting” along with “cream teas chucked in”

One member even told her the group “saved her life” while another’s son said a group outing had left his mum the happiest he’d seen her since diagnosis. “They support me” Heather says. “It works two ways… I’ve made friends for life honestly for life”

Life after diagnosis and screening saves lives

Heather says the experience has changed her outlook: “The small things in life are so important now and I appreciate them”

She also uses her story to remind others to check regularly and never ignore screening appointments. “So many women are not taking up that screening appointment… If it’s caught early you’re going through less invasive treatment”

And she stresses that men must not be forgotten. “Lots of people assume breast cancer just affects women. Well it’s not… men can get it as well. So honestly you should check once a month. It takes 60 seconds and it can save your life”

Looking ahead

The group continues to grow with guest speakers, social outings and practical support for those at every stage of their cancer journey. In November Boots in Taunton will host a Beauty Gala Evening with proceeds donated to the charity.

Where to find support

For Heather the message is simple: “If you do one thing today just check your breasts. And if you get invited to a screening do it”
