There's a challenge in Somerset today to cook 60,000 meals - in just 24 hours - all for local charities.

Around 400 volunteers are taking part in the event at Somerset's cricket club - which started at midnight.

Only items which would have been otherwise thrown out - by places like supermarkets and restaurants - are being used.

The 'Big Cook Challenge’ involves south-west student volunteers, ethical catering company Thomas Franks and food redistribution charity City Harvest

A spokesperson for the challenge said: "The Big Cook Challenge has been created to help those locally in need, experiencing limited access to food and to raise awareness of food waste.

"Only quality surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants which would have otherwise gone to waste is being used for the 60,000+ meals including ten tonnes of tomatoes, three tonnes of cabbage and two tonnes of peppers."
