Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle collision just before 2am on Friday but sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene. While he has yet to be formally identified his family are aware and being supported by specially-trained officers. Our thoughts are with them in their loss.

The black Ford Fiesta was in collision with a utility pole. No one else was injured in the collision.

The A361 was closed overnight for collision investigators to examine the scene and pending recovery of the vehicle. Emergency services on the ground carried out a search to make sure no one else was involved, supported by the National Police Air Service helicopter.

The road remains closed while engineers ensure the safety of overhead power cables. It’s not expected to reopen before 2pm.

Diversions for heavy goods vehicles are via the A37 and A39. The A361 is closed to vehicles at its junctions with Parsons Batch and Lower Westholme Road.

Anyone who travelled along the A361 at about 2am, who saw the Fiesta before the collision, or who may have dashcam footage which could help the investigation is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5221289527.
