Nottingham attacks: candle-light vigil to be held later in Taunton
Valdo Calocane has been charged with triple murder and three counts of attempted murder - and will appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday 17 June
A candle-lit vigil will be held this afternoon (June 17) in memory of the 19-year-old student from Taunton who died in the Nottingham attacks earlier this week.
In the early hours of Tuesday (June 13), three people were killed in the city - two of those were First Years at the University of Nottingham.
Barnaby Webber, from Somerset, and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, were fatally stabbed on Ilkeston Road in the city at shortly after 4am, whilst 65-year-old Ian Coates was also found fatally stabbed in Magdala Road, just after.
Barnaby was on the 1st Team squad for Bishop's Hull, near Taunton, and also played for the University of Nottingham.
Since his death, mountains of flowers and tributes have been laid at the ground of his former cricket club.
Today, between 3pm and 5pm, there will be a candle-lit vigil at St Peter and St Paul's Church - encouraging everyone to quietly reflect and pray for Barnaby's family and friends at this time.
This Sunday's church service will also pay respect to his memory.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Revd Phil Hughes said: "We're really looking to offer support for the family. We have also made the church open and available to pay their respects in quietness and stillness over the next few days.
"It is a very difficult feeling. The speed at which things happened - and all of a sudden it became really close to home, especially to this community.
"Lighting a candle doesn't change the situation, but it provides an action that stands alongside the family in their grief and says 'you're not alone'.
"The important thing is to make sure people know they are supported, that the church is here for them, and that we want to express our love for each other in this simple, meaningful, way of lighting candles and remembering."
A man has been charged
Yesterday (16 June), Nottinghamshire Police charged a man with three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, after the Nottingham attacks on 13 June.
31-year-old Valdo Calocane, of no fixed address, will appear at Nottingham Magistrates' Court today (June 17).
The three charges of attempted murder relate to three members of the public that were hit by a van.
"A significant development"
Chief Constable Kate Meynell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “These charges are a significant development and arise as a result of our thorough investigation into these horrific incidents that occurred in our city.
"Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of all those affected by these attacks, and we will continue to provide support and reassurance.
"We would also ask people to respect the families’ wishes for privacy at this difficult time to allow them to grieve."
"This has been an incredibly sad time for our city and county, and we stand united with our communities as we come to terms with the effects of what has happened
"We are keenly aware of the deep emotion being felt surrounding these tragic events and the high level of interest, not only in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire but also across the whole country.
“However, posting prejudicial information online about an active case could amount to contempt of court and, in the most serious cases, have the potential to cause the collapse of a trial."
Nottinghamshire Police also assured people local to the city that support is available for anyone affected by Tuesday's attacks.
People can call Nottinghamshire Victim CARE on 0800 304 7575 or visit their website. The helpline is open Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm, and Saturday, from 9am until 5pm.
