A man arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of an elderly woman in Somerset, has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Avon and Somerset Police were initially called on Monday (27 March) to a report of a burglary in progress in Broomfield near Bridgwater.

A woman in her 80s was found badly injured and died at the scene.

In an update released today, the police say the arrested man, aged in his 30s has been deemed not fit for police interview or to be held in police custody, so he has been transferred to a secure mental health unit.

Officers add that they have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct regarding the action they took following a missing person report made earlier in the day.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Justin French said: "Our thoughts remain with the family during this incredibly difficult time and they are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

"Incidents of this kind are rare and understandably can cause concern among the community.

"Our officers will be out and about conducting reassurance patrols and we encourage people to speak to them with any questions and concerns they may have."

Detectives continue to carry out investigations in the area and an increased police presence will be in Broomfield for the next few days.
