Man dies after fatal crash in Ilchester

Parts of the A303 was shut off by Avon and Somerset Police last night

A man has died after a car crashed with a lorry on the A303 near Ilchester last night.

Despite best efforts of members of the public, police, fire and ambulance service, the driver of the car which was involved in the collision died at the scene.

He was the only person in the car at the time of the incident, which happened just before 7pm last night (20 May).

The road between the A37 and the A3088 Cartgate Roundabout in Ilchester was closed following the incident for a number of hours.

In a statement on social media at the time of the incident, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The A303 is closed in Somerset between the Cartgate & Podimore roundabouts following a collision involving a car & a lorry.

"It happened at just before 7pm today, Sat 20 May. Police, fire & ambulance crews are at the scene & motorists are urged to seek alternative routes."

Today (21 May), the forve say the collision involved a black Skoda Citigo and a parked, unattended lorry in a layby near Ilchester.

The man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by a family liaison officer.
