Major new helicopter contract decision 'will not be delayed'
The decision has been welcomed by Yeovil's MP Adam Dance
There's a huge potential jobs and long-term boost for Yeovil's helicopter-maker Leonardo after the Government confirmed it won't delay a new contract.
There had been fears the decision was being pushed back until after the 'Strategic Defence Review'.
Leonardo was the only firm bidding to build the new military's New Medium Helicopter.
The town's MP Adam Dance has been told the bid is being allowed to proceed by the Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry.
Mr Dance said: "The Minister intends for it to move to the next stage of bid evaluation to ensure compliance against a minimum contract award criteria to ensure value for money.
"Following these discussions, the Minister has confirmed that the bid from Yeovil-based Leonardo UK is the only submission moving forward in the evaluation process.
"The Minister intends for it to move to the next stage of bid evaluation to ensure compliance against a minimum contract award criteria to ensure value for money.
"Notably, Maria Eagle MP emphasised that the Strategic Defence Review will not be used to delay proceedings, a significant departure from tactics seen under the previous government which was welcomed."
Adam Dance MP, who has been actively advocating for the social and industrial benefits of the Leonardo bid, said he is 'pleased with the progress being made'.
He added: "The Minister acknowledged the potential of Leonardo’s proposal to deliver strong social and industrial value, aligning with the government's strategic goals for the NMH programme.
"This has been a long time coming, but I am delighted that the new government is moving in the right direction on this.
"I am confident that Leonardo’s bid not only meets the necessary criteria but also offers significant value to both our defence industry and the wider community in Yeovil and beyond."
"The NMH procurement process will continue through 2025, with an expected contract award pending government approval."
