It is being reported that the Jaguar Land Rover-owner is set to build a UK battery factory in Somerset.

Reports suggest ministers have secured a promise from Tata's Jaguar Land Rover for the new South West battery factory.

Producers need them built near factories as the next generation of electric vehicles.

Darren Jones, the Chair of the cross-party Business and Trade Committee that has a live inquiry into the UK’s electric vehicle battery manufacturing, has responded to the reports.

He said, “The decision by JLR to invest in battery production in the UK is very welcome. We will want to reflect, however, on the subsidy package that was required to secure this decision and if this approach is scalable to meet the need for further battery manufacturing sites for other car companies across the UK.”

The announcement is expected tomorrow (Wednesday 19 July 2023).
