More than 200 homes have taken part in the two-week display, which finishes this Sunday.

Kara Bignell-Bird, coordinator of Yeovil’s Window Wonderland, said: “The idea came from posts I’d seen about the Frome and Bristol project.

“It all started in the South West. I was really impressed with Yeovil over lockdown and also over Christmas because the rainbow idea that happened in the first lockdown was phenomenal here.

“As I look out my window now I can still see, down my street, lots of rainbows.

“Secondly at Christmas the whole town ended up decorating their houses and it really, really was a feast for the eyes so I made an online map for the town so that people knew where all the Christmas lights were.

“Then I thought it would be really, really great to bring window wonderland to Yeovil – bearing in mind that we’ve got Covid we needed something really Covid friendly, Covid safe to do.

“Something that people could do, maybe in isolation, but also that then they can feel connected to a wider community so that’s really where the idea began.

“I was inundated by people’s personal stories, some of them were so touching, so we’ve had windows that are in memorials to children that have died young.

“We’ve had windows in memorial for Captain Tom. I’ve had messages from people saying this has just lifted my depression and given me something to look forward to.

“I’ve had other messages from people saying this has been brilliant it’s taken my mind off the lockdown so it’s been really, really positive in a way that we couldn’t have foreseen when we planned it.”
