Huge overnight fire 'was accidental' confirm investigators

Fire crews from across Somerset spent the night putting out 500 tonnes of hay, which caught alight at around 3.30am

Crews from Burnham, Street, Yeovil, Chard, Crewkerne, Ilminster, Martock and Somerton all attended.

A fire service spokesperson said: "On arrival the incident commander confirmed a large fire and immediately requested a further four fire engines to attend.

"This is a large fire involving 500 tonnes of hay, within close proximity to this is a further 2 barns. 1 barn containing cattle, the other barn containing 300 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser, 300 tonnes of hay and 300 tonnes of grain. Also in close proximity to this barn is a diesel tank containing 10000L of diesel."

At 5.30am, crews issued an update, saying: "All fire crews have left the scene now and the incident has been left with the farmer.

"One crew will re-attend in the morning to make sure it is still under control.

"The cause of the fire has been established as accidental."
