Man dies after collision on M5

A 56 year old pedestrian has been pronounced dead at the scene

UPDATE: 2pm, December 28: Avon and Somerset police have announced the death of a 58 year old man, who was said to be a pedestrian.

The man, who is yet to be named, is said to have fallen from an overbridge before being struck by at least two vehicles.

They added that their thoughts are with the family and the next of kin has been informed. The southbound carriageway remains closed , and they are now appealing for witnesses.

UPDATE: 1pm, December 28: National Highways South West say the northbound carriageway has reopened following the incident. Avon and Somerset Police continue to investigate the southbound road, which remains closed.

The M5 is closed in both directions this morning following what police say is a 'serious collision' with two vehicles and a pedestrian.

Avon and Somerset Police were called to the scene at about 8 o'clock and shut off the road between Taunton and Wellington.

Earlier National Highways tweeted, "The M5 is closed in both directions between J25 -J26 near Taunton due to a serious incident. Please take care on approach."

They later added that they were attending "a serious incident" and that Avon and Somerset Police were at the scene.
