Plans for new Taunton town centre bridge go on show today
The new bridge will replace the Goodland Gardens Footbridge.
Plans to replace a key town centre bridge in Taunton go on show later.
Two years ago the Goodland Gardens footbridge - which crossed the River Tone - was removed over safety concerns. A report concluded there were “significant” structural weaknesses within the joists and it was “not viable to repair”.
From 3 until 5 at the town's Deane (PRON: dean) House officials will be on hand to discuss the different options to replace it.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the town council said: “Following the removal of Goodland Gardens footbridge by Somerset Council, we are actively considering a replacement.
“We’re holding a drop-in event on Monday, October 28 between 3pm and 5pm to provide information and to seek input on any potential proposals for its replacement.”
At a full council meeting in early-July, officers indicated that a new bridge may be partially funded through external grants from Wessex Water, the Hinkley Point C community fund and other similar sources.
The town council is expected to make a final decision on any new bridge in the autumn or winter, with a view to such a structure being delivered in the spring of 2025.
