Firefighters have attended a major fire at a block of flats in Marigold Road, Frome.
Crews from Devon & Somerset Fire Rescue and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Rescue were dispatched to tackle the blaze, after receiving multiple calls about the incident at 7.51pm last night (3rd December).
The fire originated in a second-floor flat and quickly spread throughout the building.
On arrival, firefighters from Frome confirmed that smoke and flames were coming from a top-floor flat. Additional teams from surrounding stations, including Westbury, Trowbridge, Warminster, Shepton Mallet, and Wells, were called to assist with firefighting efforts, ensuring the safety of the scene and dealing with potential casualties.
An aerial ladder platform was also sent from Yeovil in case residents needed assistance evacuating from upper floors, along with a command support vehicle from Street to coordinate the operation.
Emergency responders confirmed the evacuation of the building and accounted for all occupants. However, one person was treated for smoke inhalation and received oxygen therapy before responsibility for their care was handed to paramedics.
By 2.26am this morning (4th December), the fire was declared under control.
Seven firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked using two hose reel jets and two main attack jets to extinguish the flames both inside and outside the building. Thermal imaging cameras and gas detection monitors were used to search for hot spots and ensure further safety following the partial collapse of the roof.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, which will continue in daylight hours after the scene was handed over to police. Local authority housing representatives are assisting in rehoming the residents due to extensive fire, smoke, water damage, and concerns about the structural integrity of the building.
Utility companies were also brought in to isolate gas and electricity supplies.
