Fire crews tackle blaze in Bath

Teams received a large number of 999 calls in the early hours of this morning

Fire crews have been tackling a blaze on Grove Street, Bath.

Teams from Bath, Hicks Gate, Kingswood, Temple, Radstock, Weston-Super-Mare and Avonmouth were called to the scene in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 21 September).

Avon Fire and Rescue Service say the fire has now been extinguished and crews remain in the area to make the building safe.

At the height of the incident, there were seven fire engines and around 40 firefighters in attendance.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service's control team received their first call about the fire at 2.45am and have taken a large volume of 999 calls since.

All people have been safely evacuated from the building and there are no casualties.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Bath, Hicks Gate, Kingswood, Temple, Radstock, Weston-Super-Mare and Avonmouth were called at 02:45 to reports of smoke issuing from a building.

"On arrival, crews found a fire in the roof of a four-storey building and firefighters used multiple high pressure hose reels and jets, plus two turntable ladders as water towers, to extinguish the blaze. Eight firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety, before using thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots in the building.

"All persons were safely evacuated from the building and an adjacent residential building. There were fortunately no casualties.

"At the height of the incident, over 40 firefighters and seven fire engines were in attendance.

"Our police colleagues were also at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is currently being investigated."
