GWR says it is working to find a temporary solution as it looks to create 190 more parking spaces at Castle Cary train station

Councillor Barry O'Leary - the deputy leader of Mendip Council - says while work is taking place people are having to park on the busy A371 which he says is 'dangerous'.

He says spaces could be made, but the way the fencing has been put up has lost at least 20 spaces.

In a statement, GWR said: ""We are conscious of the need for additional parking at Castle Cary; that is why we are investing in expanding the car park with over 190 more spaces due to open later this year.

"Whether parking in our car park or on the road however, it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle is parked safely, appropriately, and legally, and we will continue to work with our local authority partners to address any issues raised."

Councillor O'Leary responded by telling Greatest Hits Radio: "That doesn’t address the state of the car park today with disabled parking now taken over by staff members and temporary stickers blocking out of disable location.

"45 to 20 spaces ready to go in the existing car park is sitting behind Harris fencing. This is more of the same from GWR. We don’t need a one day safety solution. We need to make today day one.

"We are small community if someone is injured or killed, delighted to be a neighbour or friend. GWR needs to make tomorrow’s safety today."
