A competition starts today to highlight the best cycling projects and schemes, which it's hoped could be replicated across Somerset.

The Taunton Area Cycling Campaign are behind the new awards, with campaign lead Mike Ginger saying he hopes it’ll be a 'positive campaign - celebrating achievements' and encouraging more projects in future.

He said: "There's probably some very good examples out there that we don't actually know about.

"The idea is to invite people, organisations, local authorities, individuals to submit schemes that they are aware of."

Co-organiser Marion Nieuwenhuizen said: "Although there is some good cycle provision in Taunton, unfortunately some of it is not very user friendly.

"Taunton Area Cycling Campaign hopes that this scheme will encourage good quality provision and in turn enable more people to use their bikes.

"There are examples of good recent cycle provision in the Taunton area. These include the covered cycle parking at Lyngford Park Surgery (pictured)

"The racks are properly spaced and are close to the building access. On Your Bike provides free DR Bike Repair sessions which help to keep bikes roadworthy and encourage more cycling. The new Aldi at Chip Lane has excellent covered cycle parking close to the store entrance and a path running from an existing cycle route, to the parking."

There will be awards for Gold (excellent) and Silver award (good, nearly there) with the deadline for nominations on Friday 16th August and the awards announced on 22 September, which is International Car Free Day.
