Work has officially begun on the £17.8 million Bridgwater Diagnostic Centre, marking a major investment in healthcare services for the town and surrounding communities.
The first ground was broken on Tuesday 21 October, with the new centre set to open to patients in early summer 2026.
Run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and supported by medical technology provider Ergéa, the centre received conditional planning permission earlier this month. It will offer a range of diagnostic and outpatient services, including two CT scanners, two MRI scanners, four outpatient rooms, and two echocardiography/ultrasound rooms.
The facility will provide both routine and specialist cardiac and cancer imaging — creating a “one-stop” location for diagnostic appointments.
Adam Turner, Head of Imaging at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said “We’re really excited about the opportunity to bring complex imaging into the community with this new diagnostic centre.
The high-end equipment will allow us to perform advanced CT and MRI scans that were previously only possible at Musgrove Park and Yeovil hospitals. Not only will this free up capacity on hospital scanners, but it will also offer a brilliant patient experience.”
Mark Graves, Director of Operations at Ergéa UK, said the project “shows how innovation and collaboration can come together to benefit patients,” helping the NHS reduce backlogs and improve outcomes.
Stefan Dransfield, Managing Director of Actiform Ltd, the construction company delivering the building, added “We’re proud to be creating another community diagnostic centre, this time in Bridgwater. This facility will improve access to healthcare, reduce waiting times, and support earlier diagnosis for local people.”
Once complete, the Bridgwater Diagnostic Centre will join similar facilities in Taunton and Yeovil, strengthening Somerset’s growing network of community diagnostic services.
