Bridgwater announces latest public artwork plan
It aims to build on the interest last month with the 'fallen moon' exhibition, which had to be cut short due to technical problems
A giant replica of the moon in Bridgwater docks may have partially collapsed - but the council’s not been deterred.
They’ve invited the artist behind it to stage a similar exhibition- this time a huge replica of the earth, but instead it’ll go on show in the town hall next year.
Luke Jerram’s “Gaia” will be in residence at Bridgwater Town Hall from 3 November 2025 for three weeks. Gaia is a seven-meter diameter replica of Earth, created using detailed NASA imagery of the planet’s surface by UK artist Luke Jerram.
The artwork aims to evoke the “Overview Effect,” a phenomenon experienced by astronauts who view Earth from space, often resulting in a profound sense of awe and a deeper understanding of the planet’s fragility and interconnectedness.
Councillor Irena Hubble said: “I am delighted to hear we are continuing to collaborate with Luke Jerram. The 'Fallen Moon' project exceeded expectations for the Docks area. Families flocked to the event discovering the area as well as the project.
“The work with local schools also reaped dividends, so now to have 'Gaia' another one of Luke's works in the Town Hall will be an added bonus for the town. We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to experience this extraordinary artwork.”
Luke Jerram added: “I am delighted that my partnership with Bridgwater will be continuing forward into 2025. I hope that Gaia in the newly refurbished Town Hall will be an exciting cultural event for the town and that visitors will get to see the Earth as if from space, an incredibly beautiful and precious place.”
A council spokesperson added: "This installation is part of Bridgwater Town Council’s ongoing commitment to bring engaging cultural experiences to Bridgwater and will also mark the launch of the newly refurbished Town Hall Theatre, where visitors will get to see the improvements alongside this stunning artwork."
