An Avon and Somerset Police officer has been sacked for gross misconduct with immediate effect.

Following a hearing at the force's headquarters, which took place this week, the man known only as "PC A" was found guilty of entering into an inappropriate relationship with a young woman he met while working, among other things.

He was also found to have lied about being ill to get time off and been caught trying to get hold of illegal drugs, as well as disclosing information about a police incident to an unauthorised person.

Chief Constable Andy Marsh who oversaw the hearing, says PC A had abused his position by entering the inappropriate relationship and then not been transparent about it.

“This is a particularly serious case for which the only and most appropriate sanction can be dismissal without notice," the Chief Constable said.

"In their own right each finding of gross misconduct is serious enough to justify dismissal.

“Viewed collectively PC A’s conduct is nothing short of disgraceful and the public must have full confidence that there is no place for such serious misconduct within policing.”
